“Game Set Match” is a French fold book documenting Naomi Osaka's tennis career from 2014 to 2023. It showcases her highs and lows, resembling a scoreboard with event notes. The exterior reflects her public image, while the interior reveals her emotions through black and white match images and quotes about how she felt.

THE PROCESS
The brief of this project was to choose a person, choose a typeface that fits with their personality and design a French folded book. I chose to do this project on Naomi Osaka, the iconic Japanese Tennis player.

Despite being a tremendous force on the court, she’s actually a very introverted and soft spoken woman. She cares a lot about her mental well being and advocates for mental health among tennis players.
The contrast between the strokes on this typeface is meant to symbolize the contast between the two personalities of the player.
Tremendously powerfulwhen needed.
Japanese script to reference her Japanese roots.
When choosing the typeface, I decided to look at Japanese typefaces. I found one called VDL-V7Gothic or VDL V7ゴシック from the Visual Design Laboratory in Japan.
INITIAL DRAFTS
For the book I decided to make a timeline of all her most iconic matches since the beginning of her career in 2014 to 2023.
At first I was taking the timeline concept literally by showing a literal timeline on the top of the page. I was also trying to play around with imagery and see if I could create a system for it.
I was very inspired by tennis scoreboards
and I decided to create a graphic system for that.
I wanted to include information about the match, where it was played and who it was played against as well as the score. (Data taken from WTA)
